The history of the competition begins in 1966, when for the first time in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the best posters of the year were designated and displayed. In 1980 the competition was awarded the title of 100 Beste Plakate.

Every year, numerous graphic designers, students of the graphic and design faculties within the profile universities, agencies, printing houses, contracting entities, etc. participate in the competition.

The 2020 selection includes 43 posters from Germany, 50 from Switzerland and 7 from Austria, selected and awarded by an international jury of experts. Some works are more complex being made up of a series of up to five posters.

The exhibition "100 best posters 20" is organized in Chisinau by Goethe-Zentrum in collaboration with the National Museum of Art of Moldova, the association 100 best Plakate e.V., with the support of Goethe-Institut Romania.
